It is well accepted that imaging research underpins modern translational advances in most clinical fields with particular benefits for cancer, dementia and ageing, mental illness and brain development. However, current hospital imaging resources are inadequate for research into human health and disease due to the demands of managing caseload and clinical emergencies. 

In creating HIRF, academic, commercial and health care partners have been brought together to explore new pathways for improving the human condition. The facility will allow clinicans to be directly engaged in the research agenda while providing them with the opportunity to evaluate newly developed technologies in controlled environments.

As well as providing an evidence-base for new and improved treatments, the partnership approach will lead to more cost-effective health care and improved clinical outcomes: a scenario which constitutes a fundamental change in the culture and delivery of health care.
